Narrated Salamah ibn al-Muhabbaq al-Hudhali:

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: If anyone has a riding beast which carries him to where he can get sufficient food, he should keep the fast of Ramadan wherever he is when it comes.

{Book 13, Number 2404 : Sunan Abu Dawud}

This Hadith really pertains to when you are travelling. If you can hold your fast to a place that has food, then hold it till then.

Narrated AbuHurayrah:

A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) whether one who was fasting could embrace (his wife) and he gave him permission; but when another man came to him, and asked him, he forbade him. The one to whom he gave permission was an old man and the one whom he forbade was a youth.

{Book 13, Number 2381 : Sunan Abu Dawud}

===========================

Why the difference? Well, younger men have a higher sexual drive. This is so that it will prevent the husband and wife from having relations during the time of fasting in the day. If avoided…then it will not lead to something else… :) Once the sun goes down, you are then allowed to approach your wife. If both husband and wife have relations during the time of fasting, their fast will be nullified.
